5 tips to optimize your LinkedIn profile for recruiters

Nowadays most Dutch recruiters use LinkedIn as a first tool to find new candidates. Are you searching for a new opportunity and wondering what recruiters focus on in finding the right candidate via LinkedIn?
5 tips you can use to optimize your LinkedIn profile and become findable for recruiters.

1. Have a clear professional headline

The professional headline is the lines that appear directly after your name. Most users of LinkedIn use their current job name in combination with the organization they work for. It might be better to use keywords that describe your main specialties or when you are actively searching for a new job the terms ‘available’ and ‘searching for a new opportunity’ in combination with the most important keywords. This will attract the attention of a recruiter faster. These lines will also appear when someone shares an update. Recruiters often use keywords to search. When the right keywords appear immediately on the screen then you attract their interest.

2. Show your exact location

An element that is often used by recruiters in the search for a candidate on LinkedIn is their living/working location. Be sure that the location which you use on your profile is right and up to date.

3. Make sure that your profile is up to date and complete

It seems obvious but we still see many profiles that are not up to date. Information recruiters focus on are:

  • Summary
  • Education
  • Working experience: both employers and job titles
  • Languages
  • Skills & endorsements
  • Number of connections

Make sure that everything is up to date and that only relevant matters will be on your profile.

4. Contact info

On LinkedIn it is possible to add contact info to your profile and this info will appear beneath your profile photo. When you fill in your e-mail address and phone number this data will only appear to your connections. It is also possible to add the ‘advice for contacting’ section, by filling in your e-mail address and phone number. This information will be visible for everyone who visits your profile. Recruiters can contact you directly by mail or phone and they don’t need to be a connection on LinkedIn first.

5. Connect and network

Be active on LinkedIn: connect with colleagues, business partners, friends, etc. Become member of relevant groups and be an active contributor to these groups. By being active recruiters might notice you faster and become curious to you as a person.

Conclusion: make sure your profile is up to date and complete and make it easy for recruiters to contact you.
